Cooling Tower Replacement At 55 King Street West

Kitchener-Waterloo May 16

The existing cooling towers are being replaced at our 55 King Street West building in downtown Kitchener. Through a series of crane extractions and lifts, the new towers are being installed to provide the building with an energy-efficient cooling solution. Working with Jade Logic to complete the project, we are replacing the glycol-based system to a water-based system. “This increases heat transfer efficiencies in a more environmentally friendly manner,” mentioned Shane Pfohl, Europro KW Operations Manager.

To replace the old cooling towers, we selected the LSTE towers provided by EVAPCO, Inc. “The 4 fans in the new system all run on Variable Frequency Drives, so the fans can be modulated based on demand. The new system is designed for one tower to be able to carry the entire building load, working in a lead lag rotation as opposed to both towers working at full speed at all times,” explained Pfohl. Crafted from decades of engineering know-how, the LSTE cooling tower series from EVAPCO features state-of-the-art forced draft, counter flow technology to deliver superior operating advantages in any climate. From performance to maintenance, the LSTE cooling towers simply work smarter. They are the standard in low-profile, low-sound, centrifugal fan and forced-draft cooling towers.

The towers operate to cool down water that gets heated up by industrial equipment. The warm water from the heat source is pumped to the water distribution system at the top of the tower. The water is then distributed over the wet deck fill by means of large orifice nozzles. Simultaneously, air is forced through the air inlet louvers at the base of the tower and travel upward through the wet deck to fill the opposite water flow. A small portion of the water is evaporated, which removes the heat from the remaining water and the warm moist air is forced to the top of the cooling tower by the fan and discharged to the atmosphere. The cooled water drains to the basin at the bottom of the tower and is returned to the heat source. The vertical air discharge of the LSTE design and the distance between the discharge air and fresh air intakes, reduces the changes of air recirculation, since the warm humid air is directed up and away from the unit.

With mechanical and aesthetic upgrades as our ongoing priority throughout our portfolio, we look forward to continuing to enhance the systems that power our buildings to provide the best possible working environment for our tenants.
